Recently, I have revisited some concepts that I first learned about in network marketing industry, and one thing that has become very apparent is that many of the most successful marketers (and successful business people) are known by name. Some of whom are known better than the businesses that they own. This is because they have branded THEMSELVES.

For the purpose of this article. I will mainly be speaking about personal branding in the context of online and network marketing (although it is relevant in all industries)…

Why Brand Myself?

When it comes to network marketing, making a name for yourself is a must-do thing. There are many reasons for this, but the most prominent include building trust and rapport with potential customers; and giving you the freedom to move on to sell different products and services in the future.

For example… Let’s say you were selling weight loss pills for “Company X”… You might work your way up in the ranks of this company, and get a pretty good income. As you collect customers, they will usually be saved to “Company X’s” database. This means that this company will be able to recycle, and resell to those customers – And if you’re smart, you’ll pick an affiliate program that allows you to make a residual income from these re-sales.

Generally, Company X will build up a relationship with these customers over time, and if they are kept happy, you will keep earning…

So what’s the problem with this?

The problem here is that fact that you will only be able to benefit from this single income stream. Because you are not the one building relationships with these customers, they won’t really know or trust you, so if you try to sell anything to them again, you’ll have to go back to square one.

The way that you can get around this is by building relationships with customers before you even mention Company X to them. This way, your customers will trust you, and they will be more likely to listen to your recommendations.

Business is all about building relationships, and by branding yourself as an authority in a given industry, these relationships will be much easier to build. Over time, you will be able to build up a list of followers. The great thing is that these are all people who have CHOSEN to follow you, so they will trust you and your recommendations.

Once you have a reasonably sized list, you will be able to share various products with them, opening a whole new income stream. Not only that, but your following will continue to grow naturally, as people recommend you as a person.

Maintaining Relationships

When you become successful at building your personal brand, you may have thousands, tens of thousands, or even hundreds of thousands of followers to maintain relationships with.

Right now, that might seem quite intimidating… But there’s a trick to it. When I speak about building and maintaining relationships, I’m not talking about speaking to all of your followers on the phone, or spending hours on end replying to their emails…

These relationships can actually be built automatically!

To build automatic relationships online (and build your brand), you need to put yourself out there. To do this, all you have to do is share information with people, and make sure people know who you are!

Study your industry, and with time, you will become an expert. As you learn, publish videos on youtube. Write articles. Publish EVERYTHING that you do on your own website.

Every time someone watches one of your videos, you will be spreading your personal brand. And if they’re any good, people will share these videos with their friends. And who knows? It might become a viral sensation. The same goes for your articles.

As people follow the information that you have posted on the internet, they will begin to see you as an expert in your subject/industry, and they will become followers.

The useful thing about this is the fact that loyalty is the number one thing that increases the value of your customers. Not only for the sake of your business, but also – who doesn’t like working with people who they know and trust?
